Retro games never get old. Whether itโ€™s Crash Bandicoot or Tekken, PlayStation 1 titles bring back some of the best childhood memories.

If you're here, you're probably looking to relive that nostalgia on your Macโ€”and the good news is: PS1 emulation on macOS has never been better.

In this guide, I tested 4 popular PS1 emulators on a MacBook Air M1, and Iโ€™ll break down which one is best depending on your needs.

We have recently launched this site. On the site, you can:

Gamma: Easiest Setup (Casual Users)

๐Ÿ”— Download: https://apps.apple.com/in/app/gamma-ps-1-game-emulator/id6499106870

Gamma is originally an iPad app, but you can also run it on macOS.

Pros

  • Super easy to install (App Store)
  • Minimal setup required
  • Supports up to 4 controllers
  • Free version available (paid ~$3 removes ads)

Cons

  • Ads in the free version
  • Performance is the weakest among all
  • Limited customization

Best for: If you just want to play immediately without tweaking anything, Gamma is perfect.

RetroArch: Console-Like Experience

๐Ÿ”— Download: https://www.retroarch.com

RetroArch is not just a PS1 emulatorโ€”itโ€™s a full retro gaming ecosystem.

Pros

  • Supports multiple consoles (PS1, NES, SNES, etc.)
  • Fully controllable via controller (no keyboard needed)
  • Feels like a real console interface

Cons

  • Requires installing โ€œcoresโ€.
  • Settings can feel overwhelming
  • Occasional rendering glitches

Best for: If you're serious about retro gaming and want one app for everything, this is it.

OpenEmu: Clean & Beginner-Friendly UI

๐Ÿ”— Download: https://openemu.org

OpenEmu is one of the most Mac-native feeling emulators out there.

Pros

  • Beautiful and simple UI
  • Multi-system support
  • Easy library management

Cons

  • Manual BIOS setup required
  • Controller issues (e.g., DualShock 4 mapping problems)

Best for: Users who want a clean Apple-like experience with multiple consoles.

DuckStation: Best PS1 Emulator (Recommended)

๐Ÿ”— Download: https://www.duckstation.org

If your goal is pure PS1 performance, DuckStation is unmatched.

Pros

  • Extremely fast and smooth emulation
  • Excellent upscaling (up to 4K)
  • Works great even on default settings
  • Easy controller support

Cons

  • Requires BIOS setup
  • More settings (but optional)

My Take:

  • 720p upscaling = perfect balance (keeps nostalgia intact)
  • 4K is possible, but honestly overkill for PS1

Best for: Anyone who wants the best performance with minimal compromise

๐ŸŽฎ Controller Used

I used a DualShock 4 controller, which works well across most emulators.
